In honour of our recent groovy drop, I thought I’d let you in on all the top 1960s movies, TV series and music that inspire us around here!

That Girl (TV series, US, 1966 - 1971)

It’s the old story of a young lady moving to the big city to make it as an actress, but Ann Marie is so cute doing it! It’s just a lovely wholesome series to watch if you like inspiring coming-of-age plots with cute outfits 😍 The scene above is such a great metaphor for how I felt when I moved to London 🤣

Tropicália movement (mainly music, Brazil, late 60s)

Formed by various Brazilian artists that wanted to make new music, less “well-behaved” than Brazilian music had been by then, they mixed traditional Brazilian instruments, classical music and psychedelic rock coming from the US and UK. There was a lot of play on words in their lyrics, which were more like poems. It was also a rebellion against the struggles of the time, Brazil was in a dictatorship and young people wanted freedom. The results were taped in the album called “Tropicália ou Panis et Circenses”, which came out in 1968, as a collaboration between Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Gosta, Os Mutantes and Tom Zé. All of these musicians/bands have (had) their own careers outside of the Tropicália movement and are well worth a listen!

Nouvelle Vague (cinema, France, late 1950s-1960s)

The French New Wave cinema movement, like most art movements of the time, was all about going against traditional cinema, being experimental with how they filmed it and featuring non-linear plotlines most of the time. Some of their most famous movies are Pierrot le Fou, Breathless and Jules and Jim, but my fave is called Contempt, made in 1967 by Godard. It features Brigitte Bardot (who looks absolutely stunning in it) in a sad marriage with a cinema director, and they just depict the feeling of contempt so well.
